I’m pleased to report that the club continues to be in sound financial shape. As of our last newsletter, our club account balance was $1101. Our current balance is $1265. Our most recent expenses were for the annual picnic this summer.
A very special thank you to all who paid dues this year and last. Annual club dues of $10 – $25 per member (pay what you can) are our primary source of operating revenue. I encourage everyone who feels moved to contribute to do so, as it helps us pay minor expenses such as event supplies and mailing and printing for those who prefer a print newsletter. Club members who would like to pay dues and have not yet done so can pay by check (made out to Mount Holyoke Club of Puget Sound) or PayPal (enter firstname.lastname@example.org as the payee). Dues are tax-deductible.
ANNUAL DUES ARE WAIVED FOR THE CLASS OF 2014 and members who graduated in 1962 or earlier. If you take advantage of this offer, please let us know, so you can still be listed on the active member roster.
I know the club’s annual fiscal year (which ends in May) can be a bit confusing. Thank you again to all who have contributed in recent months!
Currently, the Club of Puget Sound’s list is nearing 700 members! Please let us know if you have a change in phone number, email, or address, or if you would like to change anything about your MHC Alumnae Association of Puget Sound notifications. Contact Liz Burr-Brandstadt ’91.

The writing group has launched a project called Angled Road. We will be producing an anthology of our work, written on the theme of the angled road and produced (at least in a small edition) using the hand-sewing method Emily Dickinson used to create her small books, also called bundles or facsicles, of poetry. We chose a phrase from Emily Dickinson’s poem “Experience is an Angled Road,” an unexpectedly difficult poem.
We have just been interviewed by a student writer at the Alumnae Association; they are interested in the connections we have made in the writing group between alumnae spanning 30 years and even a parent of a current student.
Formed in January, 2013 due to the suggestion of our then Club president, Lisa Tompkins, the writing group meets twice a month. We provide support and impetus to up your game. This is not a closed group! Take a look at our new website and like our FB page. Please contact Emily Dietrich ’85 if you’re interested.
Young Alums and current students: we will be hosting a networking and career interest day on Saturday, January 10, 2015. It will be at the Issaquah Library from 2-5 PM. We will have a panel of alumnae representing different career choices who will talk about their line of work, what their major was in school and offer helpful insight into their field of expertise.
If you are interested in helping please call Lisa Toomey P’17 at 425-221-7972. We are looking for someone in the HR field or who has experience with job hunting and resume writing. If you expressed an interest in this activity on our survey, Lisa will contact you.
Where? Beacon Food Forest, 15th AVE S & South Dakota St. Seattle, WA
When? Saturday, July 19th, 10am-2pm
The Beacon Food Forest in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle’s goal is to design, plant and grow an edible urban forest garden that inspires our community to gather together, grow our own food and rehabilitate our local ecosystem. Monthly work parties are family friendly events that involve a diverse community of all ages in a huge variety of tasks at the Beacon Food Forest site.
The group does a welcome/introduction circle a little after 10am. The community is very welcoming, with tasks for all activity levels, and African drumming to keep the atmosphere upbeat! Wear clothes that could get dirty. There’s a suggested $2-5 donation for the (free) provided lunch. If anyone is planning to come, they can just show up. Our Young Alum coordinator Elise Evans will wear the blue MHC club t-shirt, and looks forward to seeing you there! RSVP is optional, but you can email Elise to let her know you’ll be joining the work party!
